![]() | Even though Sandy Lam has established her reputation as a dance diva, she has recorded so many great ballads that touch the deepest place of our hearts. Her “依然 (Still)” is surely many diehard fans' favorite. Sandy’s version is adapted from Brenda K. Starr’s 1988 top 20 single “I Still Believe”. Even though I am a fan of Sandy, I don't like her version at all as I think it is too long and boring. I prefer the English version because the arrangement is tighter that pushes the singer’s emotion to the climax. In 1998, Mariah Carey covered the song for her compilation album "#1's" as a tribute to Starr because she employed Carey as her back-up singer and helped handing Carey’s demo tape to Sony Music’s executive Tommy Mottola. Mariah caught a cold during her 1998 Butterfly world tour, since then her vocal had been hoarse for almost two years. I think her vocal has a unique texture during this period, and her rendition of “I Still Believe” is perfect with such husky crying-liked vocal performance. Several remixes were created and Mariah re-recorded her vocals for each of them. This is probably the only time to do so in her entire career. Two urban remixes by Stevie J and Damizza differ significantly from the original, especially the latter one as it retains none of the original music and only minor lyrical elements. The melody is heavily sampled from "Pure Imagination" from the film “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”. A video was even shot for this remixed version. David Morales created three remixes, including the ‘Classic Club Mix’ that retains the original music and chord progressions. Yet, Mariah re-recorded the vocals completely. Other two remixes, namely ‘The Eve of Souls Mix’ and ‘The Kings Mix’, feature ad libs and shouting of Mariah over club beats, these vocals are completely differ from the ‘Classic Club Mix’. With these excellent dance remixes, “I Still Believe” hit #1 on the Billboard Dance Club Play Chart in April, 1999, becoming the only #1 remix up to that point isn't included in her 2003 compilation album “The Remixes”. Urban Mixes 1. I Still Believe (Stevie J. Remix featuring Mocha & Amil) (5:04) 2. I Still Believe/Pure Imagination (Damizza Reemix featuring Krayzie Bone & Da Brat) (4:32) Club Mixes 3. I Still Believe (Morales' Classic Club Mix) (9:05) 4. I Still Believe (The Eve Of Souls) (10:53) 5. I Still Believe (The Kings Mix) (8:04) Right click the links above and choose 'save as' to save the files. OMG Thank you soooo much for posting these!! I never knew they existed and I thought I was up on all her remixes. This is my favorite song of hers! You just made a loyal subscriber outta me!
Hi Nichelle, thanks for your comment. are you a mariah fan too? I really love her rendition and these remixes. I think her remixes during the sony era are gold! Can't wait for her to release a new album this year!
Mariah did multiple vocal sets Many times. Always Be My Baby had 3, 2 for Fantasy, 4 for Honey, 3 for Butterfly/Fly Away, 2 for Loverboy, 3 for Anytime You Need A Friend, 3 for Dreamlover and so on and so forth. Just saying.
Hey Eric, thanks for your note. what I mean here is she recorded different vocal sets for each of the four I Still Believe remixes (I count The Eve Of Souls and Kings Mix as one as they are basically from one set). From my point of view, I don't count dub mixes although I know there might be new vocals that are not heard on the vocal club mixes. Just curious, how do you count her vocal sets?
I count it as
1. ABMB (So So Def Mix)
2. ABMB (Morales Mixes)
1. Fantasy (Bad Boy mixes) with additional vocal base on the original album version
2. Fantasy (Morales Mixes)
1. Honey (So So Def Mix)
2. Honey (Morales Mixes)
1. Fly Away (Club Mix)
2. Fly Away (Def B Fly Mix)
1. Loverboy (Morales remixes)
1. AYNAF (C&C Mixes)
2. AYNAF (Mark Rooney and Mark Morales remixes)
